ORT UK meets ORT France

18.11.19

Prosthetic dentistry, optometry and electrical engineering are just some of the study tracks on offer if you attend an ORT school in Paris.

Curious to see ORT France’s education system in action, ORT UK crossed the Channel and spent the day at high school Lycee ORT Daniel Mayer Montreuil and the Ecole de Travail – ORT (Centre of Apprentices).

At the Lycee ORT Daniel Mayer Montreuil, a dedicated team of staff under the direction of head teacher Isaac Touitou, work tirelessly to ensure that their students receive an education fit for the future jobs market. Tomorrow’s dentists and opticians hone their skills in purpose built labs, while budding entrepreneurs study a combination of law, accounting and marketing, gaining an in-depth understanding of running a business. A new programme supporting autistic students is in full swing in another room, while across the building, in a fully stocked workshop, kids are being trained to work in the security alarm and video surveillance industry. Whatever they choose to study, the children are provided with a safe environment to practice their Judaism, with kosher meals provided and a timetable set around Shabbat and Chagim.

Nearby at the Ecole de Travail, students as young as 14 are completing paid apprenticeships in a range of subjects, alternating between the classroom and the workplace each week. Whatever the teenagers and young adults choose to study, from practical plumbing to building management, everyone is engaged in their studies and will leave with an employable skill.

Thanks to ORT France for welcoming us to your amazing schools, allowing us to see ORT making an Impact Through Education!
