ORT JUMP Mentoring Programme

The ORT JUMP Mentoring Programme was established in 2009 supported by World ORT.

The programme was piloted in two secondary schools, JFS and Hasmonean, with 30 mentor and mentee partnerships. The ORT JUMP Mentoring Programme now runs across 12 schools and every year hundreds of mentors in a variety of industries take part, assisting students to realise their true potential and achieve their ultimate career ambitions.

ORT UK has launched this year with over 400 applications from ambitious students, eager to benefit from the valuable exposure to the workplace and the chance to discuss career options at an early stage.

Applicants have specified an interest in being mentored within a vast range of industries, from aviation to the police to scientific research, as well as the more popular options such as medicine, law and psychology. We also offer general mentors for students who are unsure of their career direction.

Over the coming academic year, ORT JUMP will be working with six London Jewish schools – JFS, Yavneh College, Immanuel College, JCoSS, Hasmonean Boys and Girls schools. We are also running the programme in Copthall School in Barnet plus La Sainte Union, Acland Burghley, Parliament Hill and William Ellis in the London Borough of Camden. Students based in Camden are kindly supported by The Sybil Shine Memorial Trust.

The ORT JUMP Mentoring Programme has also launched in Manchester, working with King David High School and will arrive in other UK cities later this year.

In addition, ORT JUMP is working in partnership with Kisharon Langdon and Gateways to provide mentoring to adults with learning disabilities and vulnerable young people.

the programme

Students and mentors will complete full training, ensuring they are fully equipped to complete the programme successfully and benefit from it.

Mentors will receive full guidance on the programme, from the ORT JUMP Programme Managers. All mentors are required to complete online training, adhere to a code of good practice and undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Over the course of the academic year, students and mentors meet up four times either online or in a public place and discuss CV writing, how to promote yourself and what to expect from the workplace. Where possible they are given the opportunity to have a workplace tour and attend a real meeting.

The students also have the opportunity to attend career focussed events or webinars on a range of subjects including law, medicine, finance, psychology and engineering. Each evening is hosted by a panel of experts in their particular career and is open to all 6th form students in our partner schools.

MENTOR REGISTRATION

student assignments

The students are required to submit one creative piece during the programme.

The piece needs to be completed by mid-May so we can select the winners, who will be announced at the ORT JUMP Mentoring Programme Graduation in July.

This piece should be about the student’s experience on the programme, how they have benefitted from it and what they have learnt from their mentor. The students are encouraged to write an essay, create a video, a poster or something else to reflect their experience on the programme. If writing an essay, this should be between 500-750 words.
