ORT JUMP Careers Evenings

This year ORT JUMP arranged five careers evenings, focusing on psychology, medicine, law, engineering and finance. Industry experts were invited to speak to the sixth-formers about their career path, before leading small group discussions. Students were encouraged to ask questions and seek advice about entering the profession.

PSYCHOLOGY

“It was such a pleasure to be around potential psychologists of the future. They asked amazing questions and seemed so grateful for the opportunity to hear about career options. A few of them will be spending time with me at my work place in July and I hope they will remain enthusiastic! It was also so great to meet students from diverse backgrounds accessing this event, some of whom will be the first members of their families applying to university.”

Dr Victoria Mattison, Clinical Psychologist

MEDICINE

“I really enjoyed doing the talk. The students seem to be really interested and I’m also really impressed with my mentee this year. It’s great to be a part of the organisation – thank you for the opportunity!”

Dr Victoria Barnett, Ophthalmologist, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital

LAW – hosted by Hamlins LLP

“It was our pleasure to host a room full of aspiring lawyers at Hamlins through the ORT JUMP programme. Our young lawyers who participated found it very rewarding to share their perspectives and experience with the next generation. Law is often considered a very daunting career path, so we hope that by speaking to ‘real lawyers’, the students have gained some useful insights and motivation to get them started on a career in the law.”

Vikki Bentwood, Head of Business Development

FINANCE – hosted by KPMG

“I really enjoy hosting careers evenings at our office. I think it’s really important to show the students that these tall buildings are nothing to fear. I want all the students to feel that these places of work are open to them if they work hard and have the ambition to succeed. By simply attending these events, these students have started to mark themselves out as individuals who are interested in their careers and taking the opportunities available to them from programmes like ORT JUMP. I’m proud that KPMG can be part of that process.”

Dan Reinhold, Business Development Director

ENGINEERING – hosted by HS1

“I hope the students took something away from the session. I tried to recall how I must have looked at 16 when I started my apprenticeship and how lucky I was that people of my sort of age took me under their wing. I hope the session helped them consider what being an engineer could look like and mean to them.  Engineering has such a broad scope but is a good fundamental subject to have as a core skill within any business. I wish them every success for the future.”

Cliff Hoare, Senior Project Manager
