Kazan is the capital city of the central Russian republic of Tatarstan and with a population of 1,143,535, it is the eighth most populous city in Russia. The ORT "Mishpahteinu" Secondary School is situated in the centre of Kazan and is the result of cooperation between World ORT and the Tatarstan educational authorities and caters for students from Year 2 to 12.

The Jewish population of Kazan numbers around 12,500 and the Jewish School, located on the banks of the River Kaban, was established in 1998 and taken under ORT’s wing in 2000. The school has 593 students, supported by a teaching staff of 62 and its innovative ICT teaching methods have been adopted by schools throughout the Tatarstan Republic.

The main objective of our STEM programme, is to integrate modern science and technology facilities and teaching methods into the school, in order to prepare students for their future careers. The school is noted for its teacher training facilities and also applies its technical expertise to all events organized by the Kazan Jewish Community Centre. The school is twinned with a school in Rishon-leZion in Israel and hopes to fund new technology increase the level of Hebrew language through Skype and webinars with native speakers in Israel.

The overall goal of the STEM programme in Kazan is to ensure that the school can continue to attract Jewish families, in order to maintain a viable community whose children will build a strong economic and social base to sustain its future. In order to achieve this, World ORT has to: (i) retain the best teachers and provide them with a program of Continuing Professional Development, and (ii) upgrade existing facilities and create new technological and educational facilities that will ensure that the education it offers remains relevant and up-to-date.

The programme we are hoping to fund includes:

- School television studio
- School computer aided design and manufacture studio
- Digital science lab
- Additional presentation equipment
- Upgrading computers and software
- Craft Design and Technology (CDT) Lab
- Further teacher training in new technology

There were hardly any computers in the school two years ago but now in our new science lab the teachers help me achieve my dreams. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my friends at this school."
  • Hodaya and Yasmin both dream of becoming doctors. Luckily, they're studying at the World ORT Kadima Mada Kfar Silver school near Ashkelon, Israel, which thanks to YOUR support, has brand new chemistry labs. No wonder it's their favourite lesson! "When we first came, the paint was coming off the walls and chairs were broken. The new classrooms help us learn better, because the teachers have better facilities and the room is more comfortable, making it easier to concentrate in class." It's all part of our long-term project to renovate the entire campus. http://ortuk.org/projects/current/educating-israels-most-vulnerable-students
